I decided it was time to fiddle with openHab. In short, this is an open source home automation system.
I had a spare Raspberry pi 2 sitting around, and at first loaded openHab on it.
I didn’t understand what was going on, so I then just reflashed the device with openHabian.
I now realize I didn’t need to do this, as I’m sure I could have accessed openHab just fine as it was.
Anyhow, I think this will be more efficient.
Realize this about openHabian: it is designed to be a headless device.
You’ll access it via your network and a web browser.
I installed a z-wave usb and was having issues…I thought.
This is the UZB1 z-wave dongle. No buttons on it like some to initiate interrogation of a new item to add.
So I was confused.
I thought I had my new item in “add” mode and it wasn’t being picked up by openHab.
Guess what?
I was doing it wrong.
I thought as long as the device was changing the LED colors, it was in interrogation mode. Nope.
In openHab, if you are at the Inbox and click the “+” button, it puts the UZB1 into interrogation mode, then you need to press the button on the device. Picks it up like a champ.
